Van Buren School District to hire more bus drivers

Help wanted! The Van Buren School District is looking to hire additional bus drivers to support its transportation department. Drivers are needed for daily school routes, as well as substitutes to help with field trips, games, and after school events.

With a slogan of, “Our students are going places…help us get them there!” VBSD is hoping to recruit new employees that will help alleviate the district’s driver shortage. Applications are currently being accepted on the VBSD website.

“Bus drivers are essential to our operations,” said Deputy Superintendent Brian Summerhill. “Not only do they help ensure students get to and from school safely, but they also support extra-curricular activities and other academic opportunities.”

VBSD currently employs nearly 60 drivers and has several open positions for daily routes and substitutes. “This is a great job for someone wanting part-time work. We employ many retirees and parents. Many of our teachers and other staff also drive buses. Several of our drivers have been doing this for years and find great fulfillment in the work with students.”

Starting pay for drivers is $32.41 per run or $64.82 per day for school routes. Employees receive credit for years’ experience, including time served as a driver in another district. Classified employees with a bachelor’s degree also receive a $1,500 annual stipend.

“We encourage anyone interested in serving our students and schools to apply. VBSD values its drivers and appreciates the service they provide to our community.”

Qualifications for drivers include having a Class B CDL, with passenger, school bus and airbrake endorsement. Applicants must have a clean driving record with no major driving violations, be able to pass a drug screening, and have a clean background check. A high school diploma or GED is also preferred.
