VBSD now offering health insurance for full-time bus drivers

The Van Buren School District is offering a new incentive to full-time bus drivers. Beginning in August 2019, full-time drivers will be eligible for health insurance coverage.

The new benefit was made possible by the passing of House Bill 1223 during the Arkansas legislative session, allowing school bus drivers to participate in the State and Public School Life and Health Insurance Program. The district will pay a monthly contribution to the premium and the employee will be able to choose their plan.

“We are pleased to be able to offer our bus drivers insurance, as they are a valuable part of our district team,” said VBSD Assistant Superintendent Karen Allen. “Van Buren is currently looking to hire additional drivers to support our transportation department, and we hope this will serve as an incentive for those considering applying.”

Drivers are needed for daily school routes, as well as substitutes to help with field trips, games, and after school events. Applications are currently being accepted on the VBSD website.

Starting pay for drivers is $33.71 per run or $67.42 per day for school routes. Employees receive credit for years’ experience, including time served as a driver in another district. Classified contracted employees with a bachelor’s degree also receive a $1,500 annual stipend.

“In addition to the new insurance benefit, all drivers can also participate in the Arkansas Teacher Retirement System,” noted Allen. “They are eligible for a $30,000 life insurance policy, at no cost to them, and have free short and long-term disability insurance coverage. All employees also receive free admission for themselves and one guest into VBSD activities and games.”

Qualifications for drivers include having a Class B CDL, with passenger, school bus and airbrake endorsement. Applicants must have a clean driving record with no major driving violations, be able to pass a drug screening, and have a clean background check. A high school diploma or GED is also preferred. To be considered full-time, employees must meet certain guidelines, as outlined on the district website. Applications can be completed online or call (479) 474-7942 for more information.
