At VBSD, the safety, security, and well-being of our students, staff, and community are top priorities. Below is an overview of our comprehensive safety and prevention measures.

School Resource Officers (SROs)

Van Buren School District is committed to providing a safe and supportive learning environment for all students. In collaboration with the Van Buren Police Department and the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, we have developed a School Resource Officer (SRO) Program to address challenges facing today’s youth.

Our SROs play a critical role in fostering a safe and drug-free community by focusing on drug prevention, juvenile crime reduction, and supporting at-risk students. They engage in a variety of educational activities, serve as mentors and positive role models, and build strong relationships with students, staff, and families.

VBSD is proud to have a dedicated school resource officer at every campus, ensuring a proactive approach to school safety while reinforcing trust and collaboration between law enforcement and our community

Safe Rooms

District Safe Rooms have been constructed by the Van Buren School District in partnership with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. They are designed and constructed to withstand the pressures of 200 mile-per-hour tornadic winds. Safe Room doors will be unlocked at the first Tornado Warning siren. Safe Room doors do not open until that time. Please see the map below for all storm shelter locations.

Drug Education and Prevention:

VBSD’s Substance Abuse Prevention Program integrates classroom instruction, school-based activities, parent involvement, and community support to create a holistic approach to preventing substance abuse.

Program Highlights:

  • A clear, consistently enforced policy against substance abuse.
  • Specially trained teams of teachers, counselors, and administrators at both elementary and secondary schools.
  • Instruction and activities designed to educate students on the risks of drug abuse and promote healthy, drug-free lifestyles.

Campus Building Security:

Secure Entry System:

All schools are equipped with a secure “buzz-in” entry system at the main entrance. Visitors must press a button and face a camera for identification before being granted access by the front office. For added safety, all building entry points remain locked and are inspected multiple times throughout the day.

Please note: All visitors will need to present an I.D. upon entering any school campus building during school hours.

Advanced Security Cameras:

Each school features both indoor and outdoor security cameras. These cameras provide comprehensive monitoring and can be accessed from multiple locations to enhance campus security.

Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedures:

To ensure student safety, all K-5 schools use a unique car tag system. Parents or designated individuals picking up a child must display the assigned car tag on their vehicle’s rear view mirror. This tag must be visible for school staff to release the student. Additional school-specific details about drop-off and pick-up procedures are provided to parents by each site.
