VBSD sees record number of school choice students

Monday, May 1 is the final day to apply for the 2017-2018 School Choice Program. The Van Buren School District has received a record number of applications already this year for the program, which allows parents the option to apply for their child’s admission to participating school districts outside of the one in which they reside.

The VBSD Administration Office has had more applications submitted for School Choice than in years prior and expects the number to increase by the close of business on Monday. “Last year, we accepted just over 50 students through school choice. This year we have already received 86 requests from parents wanting to enroll their children in the Van Buren School District,” said Superintendent Dr. Harold Jeffcoat. “Between our new River Valley Virtual Academy charter school and the excellent programs offered in the traditional classroom setting, it’s no surprise we are experiencing an increase in interest.”

Families living outside of the Van Buren School District who are considering the River Valley Virtual Academy must apply for the School Choice Program to be eligible for August enrollment.

Applications are available at the Van Buren School District Administration Building, located at 2221 Pointer Trail in Van Buren. Parents must complete the required form and return the documents to VBSD. Documents may be hand delivered to the VBSD Administration Building. The office will close at 4 p.m. on Monday.

Applicants may indicate a school preference, but all assignments will be based on space and program availability. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance or rejection by July 1, 2017. For more information, call VBSD at 479.474.7942.
