One More Pull!
Several years ago, I was running in a half-marathon in Mena, Arkansas. Mena is a nice community that sits at the foot of Rich Mountain. At the top of Rich Mountain is the popular Queen Wilhemina State Park, and Mena is the starting point for those interested in traveling the popular Talimena Drive.
Now, understand that a half-marathon is 13.5 miles -- and this race starts at the foot of the mountain at the city park near downtown Mena and ends on the top of Rich Mountain at the Queen Wilhemina lodge -- 13.5 miles going up!
As I neared the end, I reached what I knew was the last serious uphill grind -- all I had to do was endure the next few minutes....just put one foot in front of the other....keep going...only a half mile to go! The forest ranger at the highway intersection at that point looked at me and encouraged,"Keep going! Just one more pull!" Having been up this mountain several times, I replied, "Yeah, I know this last pull -- it'll knock your socks off."
So, here we are in the "last pull" of the current school year....and here I am encouraging "just one more pull."
When I think about the "last pull" in the current school year, I remember the race that day....a long, hard, run....lots of ups and downs....the end is just around the corner....the most important part to come....and the gratification of closing the race having done my best....and celebrating with all the others who successfully finished.
That's the way I feel about this school year. I am always excited to start the school year AND end the school year as we prepare for the next one. Before we know it, this year will have come to an end, our kids will be home for the summer, and we will have survived that "one last pull" yet another time.
